Share the Joy in Gainesville: 3 Ways to Show the Community You Care

|

This is a time of year that has us thinking about ways we can cultivate joy in our own lives and the lives of others. If you’re looking for ways to give back to the Gainesville community, check out these ideas from the Social 28 staff.

Where Can I Volunteer to Help Gainesville’s Youth?

If you like working with young people, consider volunteering with the Alachua County Boys and Girls Club. They believe in every person’s potential to be not just good, but great, and their mission is to offer a safe space in which the youth of Gainesville can work, play, and grow in order to cultivate that potential. There are multiple opportunities for volunteers, including tutoring, coaching, mentoring, administrative assistance, and classroom reorganization. Simply fill out their volunteer application and get ready to make a difference!

I Love Animals – How Can I Help?

Gainesville has a reputation as a pet-loving community and that’s reflected in the work of local nonprofits that put their efforts toward caring for animals who are looking for a forever home. If you want to lend a hand, check out Faithful Friends Pet Rescue & Rehoming. They are always looking for volunteers to help with adoption events that require assistance with watching and walking the animals, adoption counseling, and setup and breakdown. They also sometimes need help transporting animals from their current location to the shelter or to and from kennels and veterinary facilities. You can apply on their website.

Are There Volunteer Opportunities for the Artistically Inclined in Gainesville?

If you want to use your creative talents to give back to the community, you’ll love volunteering with the Gainesville Community Playhouse. Like most community theaters, this one only has a few staff members, which means they rely heavily on volunteers to create the amazing theater experience that Gainesville has come to recognize and appreciate. There are so many ways to help out from set building to ushering – and best of all, you can invest as much or as little time as you like. Every little bit helps.

Don’t forget to check out Social 28’s Neighborhood page so you know where to go for a snack, coffee, or drinks with friends on your way home from an afternoon of giving back to the community.
